First let me apologise for not posting here recently. I have been distracted by important family matters as both my parents have health problems and my wife's mother also requires a lot of care these days, so my time has been taken up looking after these guys. They need us and we are more than happy to be here to help them out.

Back in February I turned 50 and since then I can't stop thinking about what that means!

Tip of list of what it means to be fifty is, 'I made it!'

Sadly we have lost too many friends over the years who never were able to see their 50th birthday, so I count myself fortunate to still be here and I am thankful.

Another thought at the half a century birthday is that I have survived financially. When I was young I had a big worry about how I could pay a mortgage and bring up a family, supporting them in what they needed from day to day. I think most young men have this worry and today it even includes the problem of actually getting a job!

Well our family has grown up and we had a mix of some tough times but many good times when money was tight. Now I feel that I can breathe a sigh of relief as money is not such a big challenge as it was thirty years ago!

They say with age comes wisdom. I'm not sure if I claim to have any wisdom but life experience gives you something to fall back on in good and bad moments that come along.

At fifty I am very lucky to have many friends all around the world. As the line in a Genesis song reads, "I know what I like and I like what I know!"

Being fifty is just fine with me. The next decade should be lots of fun!
