Drawing a funny head!

A sketch to show how you can make a funny head that illustrates exaggeration, as you can see the 'weight' of the head mass is in the top of the skull, so the lower section lose their weight to help keep a balance.

Drawing eyes

Eyes are so interesting to draw! Unique to every person, but it is so fascinating to study the shapes that each persons eyes make, I enjoy looking at eyes to understand how they form the curves and lines along with the setting of the actual eye socket that seats the eye ball. This creates the individual perfection of a persons eye and the excitement an artist feels when drawing the eyes.

New gadget!

Yesterday I bought the Apple iPad Keyboard Dock! The keyboard has a connecting port tat the iPad sits onto very easily and then your ready to start using the keyboard immediately! The keyboard uses the power supply of the iPad itself, so no cables or batteries are required. And it works beautifully and opens up the iPad as a true computer, allowing the user to have more functions and work on the iPad as if they had a laptop. A new an updated version of the OS is due for release later this year, OS Lion and I hope that it will give the iPad an even closer function to a true computer with things like sharing and connecting files and other pieces of hardware. But I love the new keyboard and I am typing this text with it, which makes it very easy and a pleasure o do so. The on screen keyboard on the iPad is good but this new external keyboard is GREAT. The iPad Keyboard Dock now refreshes such apps as Pages, Keynote and Numbers and gives the user a real workspace environment fel to using the iPad!

Twestival!

In March I shall be attending my very first Twestival!

It is a networking event that is raising funds for a worthwhile charity and I shall be drawing there, donating my services and hopefully raising some money towards the charity!

Click here to see and stop by the Twestival website

I am at the venue today for a photo shoot that is part of the publicity to help promote the event and I will let you know how it goes!

I will have the chance to meet new people at the event in March and have some fun with everyone! Being able to use my skills in such a way and to help raise funds for a charity is great!

I do already receive a lot of requests from charities and it would be very easy to spend all my time just drawing for free but I have to make a living and so I like to pick and choose the charities that I want to work with. I work on the basis of local charities first and then the larger national charities after, if it fits in with everything!

But the Twestival should be great as its local, only a short drive up the M11, about 20 minutes from my house and the charity is a worthwhile cause.

Website update!

On Friday I was able to do an update to my main website, giving it a tidy up and creating two new pages for the gallery of celebrity and live on the spot examples.

video

I do find it really interesting on HTML can be used to create websites and lots of fun playing around with it! Sometimes I do make mistakes but I find I learn so much from that and it helps my understanding of using HTML.

My only concern is how to ensure my site still receives a very good position in the search results but again, its fun working on that and learning as you go.

Not too much has changed on the update but I hope it makes the site look better? Let me know what you think?

Weekend drawing!

Its the weekend and as usual I have the pleasure of drawing and entertaining at weddings over the two days!

Weddings are great fun and as people are in a mood of celebration and joy, along with some alcohol mixed in, we often have a great time with many guests laughing and smiling at what I have drawn!

The really nice thing is the guests who stand by and watch me draw. I really like that as it feels like I am appreciated as they pay me some lovely compliments about my drawings! It is nice when people appreciate what you do and it gives you a real strong feeling of job satisfaction!

Wishing you a great weekend!

Colour self portrait

Again on the iPad this time using ArtStudio, I put together this cartoon of myself with colour.

Artstudio allows you to work with layers and this makes doing a cartoon with colour, nice and simple. I have a top layer for my black line work and then underneath, a layer for the colour.

Hope you like it?

Art

When I was at school my art teacher taught us that light and shadow were very important in understanding how to draw. He would give us homework that required us to look through a newspaper and find a face that had lots of dark shadows. As newspaper print back then was made up of black dots, it was easy to find a face. We then had to draw only the black areas. Just the blocks of black and nothing else.

As I did this I soon learnt how the shadows create a picture and it helped me to see and look in a different way. To look for shapes. It's called negative space, you draw the areas around the subject instead of the actual shape or outline.

Caricature

Here's a self caricature that I drew on my iPad in Zen Brush. Caricature is something that rests in drawing and even the written word. It brings meaning to exaggeration and that can apply to many aspects of our lives. Political caricature bring a message and even criticism to the audience who read and absorb what has been drawn. Live event caricatures bring fun and entertainment that often brings a smile and gift caricatures are unique and special to give to someone special. Shall I continue?
Well not really, I am sure you can see that I am simply trying to show that caricature is much more than a silly drawing of a big nose. Caricature is a part of our lives!
I wonder what you look like as a caricature?

Drawing on the iPhone in Zen Brush is possible and fun when using the artist touch pen. It is a great way to practice on a small screen or canvas, helping me to focus more on shapes and drawing the lines correctly!
