You look at the face you want to draw and 'look' to see the overall shape that the head makes.
The more you do this and you can practice this anytime you want to, make a game of it when your next around groups of people and look to see the shapes their heads make!

In fact you can do this with anything you want to draw, from landscapes to still life, look for the outline shapes in front of you, ignore the detail at first to help you 'see' the bigger shapes!

This is my 3rd year of 'serious' caricature and I feel as though I am just beginning to understand it and see head shapes etc.
