Today and tomorrow I am working in London during the day, which means an early start and late finish.
So, Id o not have time to update the blog everyday this week, apologies for that but I am working everyday until Sunday and this coming weekend the shed will be converted to my brand new home studio!
Please check back as I will try to post when I get the chance!
Thanks!

England fails in the World Cup
The football match yesterday between England and Germany was decisive and it was winner takes all.
England failed to deliver and lost the match 4 - 1 Although one clear goal by England was not given and that really does bring the whole game into question, England lacked any energy to maintain team tactics. The result was that Germany were the much better side and deserved to win the match.
the German players were younger and fitter and we saw them out run the english players all through the game.
England have some serious decisions to make.
Goal line technology, similar to how the game of Tennis uses it for difficult line calls, should be introduced to ensure fairness for everyone.
Football needs and must catch up with the technology out there and introduce it as son as possible!

Book Recommendation!
Helping others, How to offer, give and receive help by Edgar H. Schein is a must read!
You can get your hands on a copy by clicking here!
You can get your hands on a copy by clicking here!
• By the bestselling author of Career Anchors (over 431,000 copies sold) and Organizational Culture and Leadership (over 153,000 sold)
• A penetrating analysis of the psychological and social dynamics of helping relationships
• Offers specific techniques for determining what type of help to offer and how best to offer it
Helping is a fundamental human activity, but it can also be a frustrating one. All too often, to our bewilderment, our sincere offers of help are resented, resisted, or refused—and we often react the same way when people try to help us. Why is it so difficult to provide or accept help? How can we make the whole process easier?
Many different words are used for helping: assisting, aiding, advising, caregiving, coaching, consulting, counseling, guiding, mentoring, supporting, teaching, and many more. In this seminal book on the topic, corporate culture and organizational development guru Ed Schein analyzes the social and psychological dynamics common to all types of helping relationships, explains why help is often not helpful, and shows what any would-be helpers must do to ensure that their assistance is both welcomed and genuinely useful.
The moment of asking for and offering help is a delicate and complex one, fraught with inequities and ambiguities. Schein helps us navigate that moment so we avoid potential pitfalls, mitigate power imbalances, and establish a solid foundation of trust. He identifies three roles a helper can play, explaining which one is nearly always the best starting point if we are to provide truly effective help. So that readers can determine exactly what kind of help is needed, he describes an inquiry process that puts the helper and the client on an equal footing, encouraging the client to open up and engage and giving the helper much better information to work with. And he shows how these techniques can be applied to teamwork and to organizational leadership.
Illustrated with examples from many types of relationships—husbands and wives, doctors and patients, consultants and clients—Helping is a concise, definitive analysis of what it takes to establish successful, mutually satisfying helping relationships.

Fabio Capello
Fabio Capello, the England World Cup squad manager, delivered the result England needed yesterday!
It has been difficult for the England squad, ever since the warm up matches and the first two games in the World Cup competition, where England seemed to lack any real team work or passion but yesterday that was dispelled and they played a real game of football, or soccer, as others call it and England beat Slovenia 1 - 0.
England are now through to the next round!
Here is my quick pencil sketch of Fabio:

From a recent wedding
Here I am in action from a wedding last month:
Please click on the image to view full size
As you may notice, I am concentrating as I draw and that results in my face making some funny expressions! People comment about it when I draw but what can I do, I am focused on doing my best with the pen and producing a caricature that I hope will be enjoyed and appreciated! Sometimes I may lay it on a bit and deliberately stretch my face to pull some funny expressions and it gets a lot of laughs! The entertaining people aspect is something I really enjoy and I am trying to give an experience to wedding guests that makes them laugh and thoroughly enjoy the experience of me being there!

Red & Blue make black
Art is not only about allowing the viewer to enjoy what they see, art gives expression to the artist who has something to say.
Last week a real tragedy happened in the USA, one of the artists working for Caricature Connection was killed in a small airplane crash.
Michele Nichols was a young woman with an exciting career ahead of her. She worked as a lead artist for Caricature Connection in Orlando. Michele spent many hours drawing guests in Walt Disney World and added something very special to peoples vacations, with a caricature drawn by her.
Caricature Connection is a company run by my good friends Keelan and Barbie and this is a very difficult time for them as well as the other artists who work with them and who had worked with and alongside Michele.
Black is a colour that clearly represents how many of us feel at the moment. When we lose a fellow colleague it affects us all.
I do not recall meeting Michele myself although I think I may have spoken to her in Animal Kingdom one time, but I know that the artists working with Caricature Connection are all like a real big family. So Michele's death is a huge loss to everyone there.
So today I have Michele in my thought's as well as her family and of course, everyone at Caricature Connection.
I am like a second cousin to everyone there as I have had the privilege to be a guest artist and draw with them on a number of occasions in Orlando at Walt Disney World.
Michele was a Christian, as many of her fellow artists are and as I am myself, so we have hope and a faith that can help us get through the difficult days ahead.
Please stop by Keelan's blog here and Kenny's blog here to read about Michele and how wonderful she was.
God Bless Michele, draw some big noses up there in heaven.

Do you know your A B C...
Over the past week I have visited two schools and spent a day, teaching the children a technique to help them draw better.
I use the alphabet to help them discover shapes.
Shapes are what an artist is interested in. With shapes you can form the structure of what will become your drawing.
The human face is alive with shapes and being able to identify these helps anyone to draw with greater confidence.
I have talked about this before some time ago but thought it would be good to look at just a few of these shapes on the human face. The idea is to help you understand them and then practice drawing in this way, so that you also grow in confidence and get better as an artist.
So, looking at the human face, the first thing to tell yourself is to ignore what you see or try to avoid details.
We want to see simple shapes and then replicate those on paper and once together, they shall make the face we wish to draw.
The top lip is a fun shape to begin with. If you look at any top lip you should see the shape that looks like the letter M. It is stretched out horizontally and has a softer curve to the line, but you should easily see the letter M as the top lip.
People have different shapes to their top lip, so as you look at people, try to see the letter M and not the actual lip itself.
That way you can understand the shape that is in front of you and how it looks.
The shape of the actual jaw line, chin and cheek area of the face makes the shape that is like the letter U
Some people are thin, some are fat and that will change the shape of that letter U dramatically, so look for that shape and not the detail.
Well I hope that helps. Practice by looking at faces and tell yourself what shapes and letters you see before you.
Then practice drawing these over and over and you will find your confidence shall grow and you will get better as an artist.
This technique applies to anything you wish to draw, any subject in front of you, from landscapes to animals!
Give it a try and best of luck! Let me know how you get on!

People I work with...
As you may know, when I draw and entertain at events, I often have the chance to work alongside other suppliers.
People such as magicians, harpist, singers and live bands. It is always great fun to see the other entertainers and we sometimes bump into each other when we are hired in by the same event organiser!
Last night I was working at Drapers Hall in London, a very famous and historical venue dating back to King Henry VIII and former residence of Oliver Cromwell and has been in the ownership of the worshipful company of Drapers since 1543.
It was a loverly surprise to meet Maria Noakes, a Harpist who had also been hired in to play during the reception. We had worked together some years ago and it was great to see her again!
You can visit Maria's website here, where there are samples of her beautiful music
I hope I have the opportunity to work with Maria again, she is not only a superb harpist but a really person as well!

Intermittent Service?
Apologies for the haphazard posting.
My Mother in Law is in hospital and of course, family take top priority, so with all that's required to help support my wife as well as the work I have, my blog at the moment is lower down on my to do list.
So posting for now is erratic. I will do my best to keep it updated but this week may see some gaps.
Let me say thank you for being patient with me and I hope you can stick with me here, while everything carries on as I hope to post when I can.
Today I was a guest in a local school, teaching the kids to draw and it was lots of fun and the kids were very excited and energised!
I have a corporate event on Wednesday in London and the weddings this weekend again.
Catch you soon!

Weekend frolics
One from the past! I enjoy these black and white caricatures! When i was young and at school, we were encouraged to work in pen and ink to help us understand how black can not only produce an outline but also build blocks that are negative to show the light areas. I always found this fun to do! It is a real shame that I do not have any of my homework assignments from the 1970's to show you!
I have another busy weekend and after a late finish at a wedding last night, I have another this evening and then I am drawing at a charity event on Sunday afternoon, where I am donating my services to help raise funds for the charity.
The charity in question is the Marie Curie Cancer Care and you can visit their website here

Sorry, busy again
Apologies for the bum note post, I have been teaching today at a local school, went to 6 classes in one day!
Work is as busy as ever and I also have a family member in hospital at the moment, so the blog was not top of my priority list these past few days!
But I am still here and aim to post, so please bear with me.... I appreciate your indulgence!
Oh, I have been asked to film with the BBC next month, more on that soon!

Children love a cartoon!
Children seem to really love caricatures and are always so eager to see all the fun!
The challenge with kids is that many of their features have yet to fully develop! Sometimes it can be difficult to know what to do with such a young face. Cute button noses and toothless smiles are common.
But their ears are often out of proportion to their head size. This is normal. As they grow their head will increase and so make their ears look a better size in relation to their heads. Some will not be so lucky and may have big ears for the rest of their lives! Noses will grow and form to whatever size the gene poll has determined in their family!
With kids, you just have to look a little bit harder to see the cartoon in front of you!

Yesterday Steve Jobs gave the Apple opening keynote to WWDC and as expected, some new and exciting stuff for the OS that runs the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad as well as a brand new iPhone4!
Her is a sketch I made during the keynote based on Steve Jobs and with a futuristic cartoon version of Jobs, that if he lives for another 100 years, he may well look just like this....

Orlando 2010
Yesterday my wife's sister and her family joined us for a BBQ and to talk over our vacation we are all taking together to Orlando this August!
We had a great day and we are all very excited about the upcoming trip!
This will be the second time my wife's sister and her family have visited Orlando and we shall be taking the opportunity to show them round more of the attractions and restaurants in the area.
One new ride that opens later this month, is the Harry Potter ride in Universal Orlando resort! It will be very cool to enjoy this new experience!
Orlando is like a second home for me. Below is a picture of my loverly wife and I in Sea World, 2008:
Our very first time there was back in 1998, when we took our family for a holiday, thinking this may be the only one time we would have to visit the area and theme parks. My children were young and at the right age to enjoy all the wonderful fun that Orlando offer's.
That first trip made a big impression on me and we all said that we could feel the magic in the air. I know that sounds a little corny but it was true, it really felt like that for us.
The two weeks we had in 1998 were perfect. I mean we had the most amazing holiday where everything was smooth and without any problems. Considering this was our first time and we did not know how all the theme parks operated in terms of how to get the best from them, we still had a fantastic holiday and even the weather was perfect as Orlando at the time was experiencing a heat wave!
Well that holiday had me hook line and sinker, as they say and I simply fell in love with the place.
Today I have many very close friends who live and work in Orlando and this makes visiting even more special as we get together to catch up and have dinner together. Having friends like these guy's in Orlando gives me so much, I respect them, I admire them, I am inspired by them and I am very lucky to be able to call them friends.
Visiting orlando will never stop for me. We are already planning another trip there next year, to take my nephew on vacation, as he has never been to Orlando and we would love for him to enjoy all the fantastic fun and thrills on offer!
If your ever in orlando, keep an eye out for me, you never know, we just bump into each other!

Sunday stuff
Well today I actually have a day off, no wedding to rush off too, no strangers to meet and draw and no children to cope with who want to be drawn over and over again and again!
A day to spend with the family and if the weather is fine, a chance to BBQ in the garden.
What ever you are doing today, I trust you will have fun, stay safe and keep smiling!

The gig'n artist
As a caricaturist who draws on the spot caricatures at weddings and events of all kinds, I am always out and about, travelling from venue to venue to entertain with my fun caricatures and bad jokes!
In some respects it is almost akin to being on tour! While I come home after every gig, I usually off out again to the next gig!
It is enjoyable and always great fun to meet so many people up close and talk with them.
I met people from all walks of life and it can be very interesting to know what others do for a living and how their daily working life can either excite them or bore them!
I also meet the owners and staff at the venues and again, they are always fun to talk with about the work we are involved in.
Then there are the other suppliers and entertainers and often than not, we spend some time swopping stories and sharing our experiences in the 'business'. This can be very enlightening and also encouraging!
When all is said and done, I am very fortunate to be doing what I do and to be so busy with so much work booked into my diary.
I am currently booking dates for this the remainder of 2010 as well as 2011 and 2012!
I already have 34 weddings booked in for 2011 and I hope that it will prove to be another successful year for me!
Is there a downside, I hear you ask?
Not really. I just need to be careful about burnout or exhaustion as being so busy requires a lot of energy and a reasonable level of fitness.
I do not smoke, so I try to keep fit, although my weight is always a battle and diets seem like a never ending task. But with being so busy I have little time to exercise as I would like too, I know it sounds like a lame excuse but there you are.
When I do get a free day, I try to relax and recharge the batteries so I will be ready for the next gig.
Tonight I have a wedding in the village of Dedham. The village is very well known as the place where the famous English painter, Constable lived and painted. Just a mile from there Constable painter the world famous Haywain that now hangs in the national portrait gallery in Trafalgar Square, London.
So I shall be in a historical area for artists this evening!
I look forward to having lots of fun and meeting everyone at the 'gig'!

When friends unite
When caricature artists get together it is not long before they do two things. One is start to drink and the second is to start drawing each other!
My good friends Wayne Savage and Sam Klemke met with myself last year in London, as Sam was on a vacation trip and we got together to shoot the breeze.
Wayne had prepared a drawing for Sam and I and below you can see his wonderful work:
I now have the drawing and shall be taking it to Las Vegas in November to hand over to Sam.
