How do you cope with your email?
Email is a great tool to communicate with. But the only problem as far as I can see is the dreaded 'Spam' mail.
There is so much of it. It falls into two types of Spam mail:
Type 1: Fishing - spam of this type is trying to make money out of you but in an illegal way. The spam mail will contain a link that if clicked upon, allows the spam sender to gain access to your computers files and potentially your passwords and any bank account details. Within this category there are also what I would call the 'Cold Callers', these are trying to sell you something but are rarely legitimate.
Type 2: Malicious - spam like these are dangerous as they are virus and maleware carrying emails. If activated by either opening and/or then clicking something within the spam mail, a virus can infect your computer. These are nasty as it will mean, should your computer get infected, going through the motions of getting your computer 'cleaned' and the virus/maleware removed. There are a few viruses that can never be removed and that then requires your computers hard drive to be 'wiped' and the computers operating system and software to be reloaded. A real awkward situation if you should ever find yourself unlucky enough to experience this.
Sadly Spam seems to be with us for as long as we can tell. All I can say is simply becareful when looking at your email inbox. You should have a 'Spam' folder that your email will direct suspicious emails too, but I find I still have to check that folder as some genuine emails are moved there by mistake.
Just do not open any emails your not sure about, delete them!

Busy report...
Hello everyone, yesterday I was drawing at Brunel University in West London, it was great fun and I was non stop from 11am till 4.15pm..!
This morning I had an early Dentist appointment and everything was fine, no work required thank goodness. I am like most people, I do not enjoy the Dentist but I have to say that my current Dentist is actually very good. I have been with him for 3 years now, we both go to the same Church, his technique is not as rough as some other Dentists I have been under! So going to visit him every six months for my check up is not as daunting as it used to be.
I have a busy weekend ahead, a Wedding to entertain at in Southampton tomorrow evening and then the Canvey Island Wedding fair on Sunday, where I have a stand and hope to drum up some more business!
The past few weeks I have been at wedding fairs and so far the response has been great and I have picked up a lot more work with some couples booking for their 2012 weddings! Now thats forward planning!
So I am wishing you all a great weekend and thank you as always for taking the time to read my blog.
I will of course be posting more art and keeping the posts running on a daily basis, so please do come back and revisit or follow my via the blogger/google app or add me in your RSS feed!
Thanks!

Live Wedding Caricatures
Below is a photo of yours truly drawing live at a wedding reception in May 2009. The wedding was held at Gaynes Park in Epping, Essex and everyone had a wonderful time, the venue and their staff were great!
The photograph was taken by the fantastic David Court, a very professional photographer and really nice guy! Thanks David!
As you can see from the photo, guests will sit for me while I draw them and others gather around to wait their turn and also enjoy all the fun of watching the caricatures being drawn! We have so much fun!
That particular day was not long after my holiday in Las Vegas. My wife and I had spent a week in Vegas and also a few days up in Minneapolis with our close friends, Tom & Lisa. While there we visited some outlets and I bought the shirt you can see me wearing in the photo!
This coming November we shall be back in Las Vegas again for the ISCA convention for caricature artists. We are really looking forward to being back in Vegas, it is a FUN town!
That trip will also include a road trip as we are flying in and out of San Francisco. We have a hire car and are going to drive down to Vegas over 3 days, taking in the sights.
I am going to take my wife to Lake Tahoe, Virginia City and Sparks (Reno) and then head down through the desert on Highway 95, it will be an interesting road trip.
After the convention in Vegas, we shall then drive back via California taking Highway 1 up along the coast to Montara south of San Francisco, where my old school buddy now lives. So we shall have a chance to hang out with him and his loverly wife and catch up. I have not 'seen' him for like 30 years!

Elephant illustration
My wife loves elephants and I also have a passion for them. They are such majestic creatures. We are going to be visiting an Elephant orphanage in 2 weeks time and we can't wait to be up close to the elephants.
We should also see some in the wild if we are lucky enough!

Photography
My hobby is photography. I love to take photographs. A photo shoot will be anywhere from 200 to 600 shots and from that I should get a handful that are worth keeping! One of the good things about digital photography is that the camera's allow to use a large storage/memory card and you can shot hundred's of photo's using these cards! I use a SD 2GB card but have recently bought a 16GB card, so I can shot a lot of photo's!
Click here to visit the SD website that has everything you need to know about SD cards!
The photo below is of my cousin's wedding. They had a photographer to capture their day but I took my camera along and took a bunch of shots as well.
This one came out pretty well and my cousin said she really liked it as one of her favourites from her wedding day!
So here I have applied some photoshop edits and made a copy in black and white, putting them together to form this finished piece. Click on the image to view full size.

Sunday Sketch

I hope to be able to share with you every Sunday, a sketch that I have made.
These can be on any subject from still life to animals to people!
The sketches will be mostly 5 minute sketches that I make quickly. Often in this process you can catch something of the energy and life of the subject you are drawing.
It is a great way to practice!
The Owl above is a native of the California/Nevada areas and is a wonderful creature!
I hope you like the quick sketch, click on the image to view full size!

Not well!

Today I am feeling like I have a fever. I have had a cold and cough for 3 weeks and even though the Doctor gave me a short course of anti biotic, I still feel under the weather and had a rough night last night.
I have a wedding to entertain at tonight which I shall do , just need to take some medicine to get me through.
I am really fed up feeling like this. I am not usually a person who gets sick.
Next week is quiet on the work front so I shall be resting up and taking easy to see if I can finally beat this thing!
As yet I am still waiting to see or hear anything about MacWorld 2010?
I was hoping to see what the show would give us this year as it is the first year that Apple are not there.
Lets hope we can find some YouTube video's of attendee's who will share with us what has been going on!

Interview with ME!
When did you start drawing?
Answer: As far back as I can remember, a very small child and I have very fond memories of when I was around 7 years old, laying on the floor with paper and a pencil drawing and our pet Budgie would perch itself on the end of my pencil as I drew! I always loved that!
What did you like to draw?
Answer: Well like most boys, cars and anything to do with the army. This was the early to mid 1960's and my father had served his national service not long after WWII and I was in awe of him for being a real soldier and having spent time serving in Germany. So because of that I loved to draw tanks and guns and explosions! I had so much pride in my Dad for being a soldier and that gave me the motivation to draw anything related to war!
Do you draw things like that now?
Answer: No not now, I am more focused on caricatures & cartoon styles of drawing the human face. But now this has come up in the conversation, it has me thinking again. I absolutely love how Mort Drucker draws soldiers, truly awesome!
How do you approach drawing the human face?
Answer: Thats a god question and one I get asked a lot. There are many other artists out there who draw a million times better than myself but my approach has been developed by learning from such people and from close friends in the business. There are some basic rules when it comes to drawing caricatures and as you learn them, it helps you when you go about drawing the face. But to answer your question directly, what I mean by that is, how I 'do it', it happens within the very first few seconds of looking at someone's face. I can only say that it happens in a kind of natural way that I actually can't explain! Sorry if thats sounds trite or like a cop out, but it's true, I have always 'seen' people like this since I was a child. It has taken me many years to then realise the ability to draw this onto paper. I still have a lot to learn and I don't think I ever will stop, but thats the real fun part, having the motivation to get better, to improve one's work and then seeing it happen, well that gives me such great satisfaction. Then I move on to continue to improve again and again, its is a constant cycle that I am grateful for. There is never a dull moment!
So are there any down sides to drawing caricatures?
Answer: Not really! The only thing that can get me down is when I have tried my best to draw a strong likeness of a person and then that person thinks the drawing looks nothing like them. Some call it rejection but it is more than that. You see, someone like me will poor their heart and soul into drawing and when it is not accepted or liked, it cuts deep and can be hurtful even. I know that caricatures can been seen as a funny drawing and that there is a lack of respect for such drawings, but it is still art and an artist like myself still goes through the same motions. I fully understand how people 'see' caricatures but it still hurts when my work is rejected! Anyway, the up side far out weighs this. I get to meet many interesting people every week! I get to travel extensively around the world and I am based form my home which means I have a very short to walk to each morning!
What will 2010 bring to your work?
Answer: Now that is a good question! Well this year I am drawing and entertaining at many weddings here in the UK. I have some trips around the world with my wife and no doubt during those I will be drawing people in the locations we visit. One of those trips is to the ISCA convention in November that is being held in Las Vegas, thats a almost a week long convention on drawing caricatures with around 200 artists from all over the world! I always seem to have a number of personal projects on the back burner, so if I get time I always try to realise some of them. Things like drawing more cartoon illustrations, working on improving my bodies and constructing scenes for caricatures. I also love technology and I am a bit of a geek I guess, so the new iPad looks like great fun and if possible, I would love to get one!
So computers are a part of your tool set?
Answer: Yes! I use my computer to draw digitally and also interact with the world wide web and also to run my business.
What is your set up?
Answer: I have an iMac 24inch, a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet, a canon scanner LiDE90, an Epson A3 R2880 photo printer, an iPod, a Samsung mobile/cell phone and a logitech desktop microphone. I of course have paper and pencils/pens and watercolour paints.
Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to learn to draw?
Answer: Sure, I always try to encourage others as I was encouraged at school and through my whole life. The best thing is to draw every day, even if it is just a doodle, draw every day. The internet has some great results for people who search for help and tuition on how to draw, search google! If you have one or two artists who you really admire, copy their work! That will really help you! And never forget that even the greatest artist has an off day! So you will too. Just keep going, thats the secret.
Thank you Steve, do you have any final words?
I must say Thank You to my fellow artists who have encouraged me on a personal basis and to those who have become very close friends. Art has given me so much and I have a wonderful life that is built on friendships not money. Money is not that important and I am an average wage earning guy but it is how you live your dream that is so important. My wife is as they say, the person behind my success, she is always supportive and gives me strength. At then end of the day, what I really want to for the person who I am drawing to turn to me and say, "thats great, I love it!". Then I know I have achieved what I set out to do, make people happy!

Caricature process

Here is a commission that I completed yesterday, I captured the steps and thought you may find it interesting in how I go through the process. Please click on the images to view full size
So I start with an actual pencil sketch of the subject, I have the photo's of the subject up on the screen of my iMac:
I then scan the sketch into photoshop and start the process of inking the lines on a new layer above the scanned in sketch, screen shot of my desktop with photoshop CS3. I am using a Wacom Intuos3 A4 tablet with PhotoShop CS3:
Now I am working on a new layer underneath the line layer and I have deleted the scanned in sketch layer as it is no longer required, this layer is for the colour:
Now I have the skin tone down I go on to add some details like the clothes and hair colours:
And then the final shadows and other flesh tomes are added and we are done!:

Turtle drawing
This is a current job I have been commissioned to work on, create a new Turtle cartoon style drawing for a company who want to use it with kids under 5's for the children's workshops that they run.
This is the first drawing I did from the brief:
It was OK but 'felt' as if it would fit an older child demographic, say age 7 and above, so I worked again on the drawing and changed it to give it a 'younger' childish feel:
This was 95% there but the head represented a dinosaur 'look', so I redrew the head to give a more rounded turtle look to it:
.On Monday I will find out if this last drawing has met the brief and then I can go onto the next stage to add color!
It has been fun and I enjoy these type of jobs when they come in to my desk!
I will post the final color version of the turtle once it is given the full OK from my client!

Update

I have on my desk at the moment a cartoon illustration/character commission, a gift commission and some other admin type activities, along with the live gigs, so it is a little crazy here as usual.
I am also planning this month to move the studio to a new room in the house, so February is looking like another busy month for me!
The car has to go in for a service next week and thats not cheap!
Four weeks from now my wife and I are going away on holiday, so I have to also get things ready for that!
Just thought you might like to kow what I do with my days, often people ask me what I do during the week!

I will post again later today...
