Monkey around?

This cartoon is a fairly straight forward representation of a chimpanzee, there is hardly any exaggeration used.

Some faces have this 'condition', you might say, they have natural features that are already exaggerated.

People who have a face with their features already distorted are a pleasure to draw. They only come along once in a while.

Maybe it is a little upturned nose or a huge chin, there are many ways in which the human face grows, develops and looks out of proportion.

In fact we have tiny differences to our faces that make us unique as individuals, some folks find that their differences can be more exaggerated than others and so have a 'funny' face.

You can look at actors and television celebrities such as Bruce Forsyth, he has a huge chin, to see what I mean!

1979

Yes as hard as it may seem, thats me in 1979 in the art studio where it all began for me. I have hair and no beer belly!

This was the year that started my career within the art business. My best friend at school had already secured a job in an art studio and was doing very well and loving every minute of it. We used to play squash together as well as having a drink and hanging out, when one day he said to me there was a vacancy in the art studio for a messenger and that I should apply.

That I did and landed the job. So I was the messenger boy for A Good Studio (as it was called), based in Soho in London circa 1979... I loved it too and soaked up the energy within the studio from everyone who worked there.

We had a lot of laughs and many jokes were played at my expense as the new boy. I loved it!

The studio was mainly focused on the advertising business and had accounts with Lasky's, the large electrical store based in Tottenham Court Road off of Oxford Street as well as other large high street retailers and many smaller clients.

So working amongst a team of around 15 or so people, there were paste up artists, illustrators, cartoonists and others in involved in the various array of services for producing advertising art.

It was better than going to art college as I was on the front line and could see how things were done, short cuts etc and other ways to get the job done and out the door. I learnt a lot while I was there.

I even progressed into printing for the studio, known as PMT printing or Photo Mechanical Transfer, a process of fast developing onto photographic paper. This was used for the paste up artists when they required font and text that they had pasted up on a board, to be reproduced a s a final print to create the paste up that would then go to the commercial printers for inclusion as the advert for the newspaper or magazine.

This was before the days of the computer although the Apple Mac was just around the corner and would change the nature of the business for ever!

It was a great couple of years, I was young and foolish and loved London with all my heart. My parents were born and grew up in London, so it was like being at home for me.

When I look back at that time I have no regrets what so ever. It was my first rung on the ladder so to speak and it gave me so much in terms of experience and also to learn from my mistakes.

So it is wonderful that I can say with pride that I am in the art business and love it with a passion.

My best friend? He has had an amazing successful career and continues in the advertising business to this day. He now lives in and has become a nationalized American Citizen. We keep in touch and I hope soon that I will be able to make the trip to California to see him and his loverly wife. (If your reading this Kev, I never did say Thank You for getting me the job at A Good Studio, thanks mate!)

Q & A

Question: How do you get work?

Answer: Well this is more of a business question but some of you reading this blog may be asking yourself how can you get work for your own business, wether it is art or widgets you may be selling.

The key avenue for enquiries to come in on is the internet.

So you must have a website.

Promoting and getting people to visit is the challenge though.

Submit your site to the search engines. Always use your website address in your promotional materials as well as email signature and any online forums you may belong too.

Spend time on the internet pretending your the customer looking for your service, ask yourself how you go about finding the information you need as a customer. Did you use a search engine, if so what key words provided the results to the right websites... etc etc etc.. do this and take note of your findings as a customer and then ask yourself if your website and web presence works to fit your findings about a customer looking for your service online.

Search in google for tips and advice about web presence as there are many resources out there that are interesting, informative and can give you help to give you the results you need!

Thanks to everyone who has asked me this question over the last 5 years!

Draw onto your computer!

Many of you know that drawing direct onto the computer these days is very easy and a standard way that artists produce their art work.

The best way is to use a Wacom device.

Wacom make and sell a range of excellent 'tablets', as you can see in the picture above, as well as a range of Cintiq 'tablets' that allow you to draw directly onto the screen, as if it were your computer screen!

If you have never tried this before but are thinking of venturing into this area, I would recommend you start with a small tablet, just as the one shown above, before you spend a large amount of money with their larger tablet range.

Also, try a search in YouTube for wacom and you will find a large number of video's all about the tablets and also instructional type video's on how to draw on the computer, using the wacom range of tablets!

Cartoon fun

I do not create as many cartoons as I would like to do.

Writing the gags is a creative process in itself and you have to work at it to produce good material, something I am always trying to get right.

The cartoon above started out as just a cartoon pet dog illustration. But I wanted to add some humor to it and thought his expression would fit well into a scene of a special store that only sold bones for dogs. Hence the Bones R Us gag that reflects the Toys R us store name that is worldwide and very famous.

He looked to me like he would walk through such a store with a feeling that said "I have arrived!"

Anyway, it is not the best gag but still conveys a little fun and I hope that you may enjoy it.

Dutch art

Here is my good friend Jan Iblings in full flow drawing his loverly and fun caricatures!

I am very lucky to have caricature friends in Holland, all who inspire me and whom I respect greatly.

With a bit of luck, there will be a get together later this summer in Holland for us all and I can drive over there with my wife and spend a few days having enormous amounts of fun and laughter with them all!

Celebs

Charles Bronson - Actor

One question I am often asked by people when they are watching me draw live, often at a wedding, is 'have I met the celebrities', that they can see on my display board.

This may seem like a straight forward question but I can just feel their anticipation for me to say 'yes I have'.

They really want to hear that, as if it makes the caricatures more magical or something.

This tells me that people have a desire for the fame and celebrity status, so much so that they want to be near to anything or anyone who has that connection to celebrity.

But why should the caricature become more real or life like if that was the case, do I really need to have met and drawn the celebrity in person? What difference would it make?

I must confess that I too have the same emotions from time to time with celebrity. I am just like everyone else. There is something about fame that creates a special magic for our lives. We can drift into a world of make believe for a moment and escape all our problems.

I have met a few celebs and have drawn them, but it is my art that I want to 'speak' to people, not the fact that I may have actually met the celebrity in person to draw them.

I am lucky to have such a job that brings me into contact with fame but once you have spent some time with it, the magic can wear off. It is life just as you and I live it. We are all just making a living, supporting our families and ourselves as we journey through life.

By the way, I was drawing last week at an event where John Humphrey's of BBC Mastermind was there as well as Brian Rix (you have to be old to know who he is!). fame eh!

Subway trains

Click on image above to view full size and amaze yourself in the Tokyo subway system!

Today we shall be getting around Tokyo by using the subway. It looks very confusing at first but after a while you get used to how efficient it all is!

The price of a ticket is very cheap compared to London. I think it is approx £1 in Tokyo compared to approx £5 on the London Underground!

The stations are usually well designed and colour coded to help you find the right platform and trains!

We see it as an adventure and lots of fun using the Tokyo subway!

We are staying in Asakusa which is can be seen on the subway map in the top right hand corner!

Fly away!

Click on image above to view full size and admire the beautiful temple!

Today as you read this, I shall be on a plane making my way to Tokyo with my loverly wife!

I am competing at a caricature convention in Tokyo and must say that I am really excited about it as well as being back in Japan!

I shall be taking lots of photo's, so when I get back in 10 days time, I shall post some of them!

Websites galore!

One of the great things about my iMac and having a MobileMe account with Apple, is that I can create simple websites fast and easy AND get them up on the web immediately!

I have created one as a portfolio to show my illustration cartoon work, may have potential leads this year, so fingers crossed!

I shall want to improve on the design, once I have some free time in March, but that took me 40 minutes last night to put together and get up on the internet!

DIET UPDATE!

I am doing really well with the diet and so far I have lost 2 stone or 28lbs. I now feel so much more healthier and have a skip in my stride and gumption in my boots! Look out!

I bought a new suit last week and my wife says I look very slim in it! I wonder what she is after?

But I am so pleased I have managed to achieve this weight loss, I have another 14lbs to lose to get to my ideal target. Then I shall be able to hide behind a lamp post!

Sad Day

Today is the day we say goodbye to my Aunt Muriel who passed away a couple of weeks ago. She is being cremated early this afternoon.

Although it is a very sad day, I will meet up with some of my family that I have not seen for a few years.

My Aunt was on my Dad's side of the family, and altogether there were 13 of them, brothers and sisters who grew up in the east end of London during the 1930's - 40's and 50's.

By the 1960's the brothers and sisters began to move out of London as they settled with their families. A couple stayed in London's east end. My Aunt Glad is still there today and she is in her nineties!

My Aunt Muriel was a loverly lady and always very loving with a beaming smile. A real londoner who saw the positive in life.

May she rest in God's peace now.

The Romans are coming....

A cartoon that I created some years ago for a friends website. It was a big success and I have always wantd to revisit the idea and theme of the Romans.

I have always been influenced by Asterix, since childhood and have admired Albert Uderzo's illustrations enormously!

So another back burner project is to draw more Romans! Watch this space!

Computing stuff

Windows or Microsoft are finding it tough as they continue to lose market share to Apple.

Yes a post about technology, so bare with me as I go on....

I love computers, they are so cool and the kind of technology that I enjoy playing with.

At school in the early 1970's, we had a computer class and back then it was a different situation as yo had to program your own 'software' or function to make the computer run and do something! It was in binary code and I actually got on well with it!

Ten years later and computers had moved on and had become the start of what is now today, the very backbone of structure for how society 'works' every minute of every day!

I remember well using Microsoft Office in its early versions and up until 2007!

I then made the switch to Apple and got my first Mac.

Apple have done a great job and after a shaky start with bugs and issues in the first early release of Mac OSX Leopard, it seems to have settled down and works well. I am enjoying my Mac and would not now switch back to Windows.

And there is the rub. Microsoft are losing people like me to the Mac. But seem to ignore the fact that if they do not address this soon, they will see their market share fall dramatically.

Windows Vista was troubled. Although my son installed it on my old PC I gave him, when I received my iMac, he has not had any real issues with Windows Vista.

Microsoft have now put out the new Windows version 7 in beta to people and so far the reports are mixed.

I have read that Windows 7 is just a revamped Vista with no real alterations to improve and fix Vista problems.

I have also read that people are asking Microsoft to put Windows back as it was, around the XP type or Windows 98 type operating system. Of course this idea would need the OS to mirror todays interface and be similar to how the MAC OSX functions.

So this next 24 months will be a real test for microsoft. I wish them well.

It would seem strange if Microsoft failed and disappeared into the ether, don't you think?

Today's caricature job!

This is the project I was working on today.

Snow & Caricature

We have snow and it slows everything down! I took this photo yesterday of the Great Tit in my garden, I had put some nuts in the garden and we had lots of visits from a few different bird varieties!

Yesterday I updated and finished my new website and also received my first order from the website!

I hope to post again, later today with some art, so pop back if you can!

Buy this book!

Let me strongly recommend to everyone who loves to draw and also seeks to improve their work, buy this book!

Sketch Infectus is by Joe Bluhm, an excellent artist who has a wonderful talent and great skill in drawing.

I first met Joe back at the NCN convention and it was clear then he had an amazing talent.

Not only his caricatures by his whole art style and many styles from portrait to observation studies are outstanding. You will find the book a real inspiration and help in your own art.
