Sunday Stuff

Busy time still for me at the moment. Thought I would mention a little tip on drawing the human face.

When someone thinks of drawing the face they often feel it is one of the hardest things to draw.

Well if you apply standard drawing techniques to any subject, that can be a face or a landscape, you should be able to draw anything in front of you.

So what are these techniques I speak of?

Drawing has techniques that act as an aid and help to the artist when drawing. One of the most important of these is shapes. If we think of the human face, then we first need to look to se shapes but the issue is that a face is something we have a strong emotional tie too.

So when you look at a face you see a person and not simply a set of shapes.

Getting over this hurdle is the first step to drawing the face. You need to ignore the 'person' first and look to see the shapes that are in front of you.

So if we look at a face we should see lots of curves, circles and even oval shapes in front of us.

If you look at small groups like the eyes and the nose, you can see that together these elements make a triangle shape.

Imagine a line running across the face just below the nose. Now think that all you can see is below that line, mostly the chin. The shape that the lower jaw/chin makes is like that of a bow of a boat. Can you see that?

Using these technique of looking for shapes will really help you in drawing the face.

Give it a try, make up your own shapes by splitting the face with lines as I described with the lower jaw, why not have a line running from top to bottom down the centre of the face and look at just one side, what shapes do you see there?
